Read Mark 5:21-43

When you begin to read the biblical accounts of Jesus’ life (called ‘Gospels’) you immediately realise that He was a man of compassion. He was a man who cared deeply about others.

As we work our way through the Gospel of Mark we see that He immediately began healing and helping people. He drove out demons from people. He cured fevers and other illnesses. He cured many of leprosy, made the lame and paralysed walk, even raised people to life once they had been dead some days. (Mark 5:21-43).

Many people are compassionate. Many people care and try to better the quality of life for others. But Jesus did things no one else could.  The crowds were amazed crying out, ‘What is this? A new teaching  and with authority!’ The demons cried out about Him, ‘...Jesus, Son of the Most High God’. (Mark 5: 6).

Jesus’ compassion was part of a bigger picture. He was the One (called the Messiah in Hebrew or Christ in Greek & English) who was to come to bring in the Kingdom of God. Jesus Himself read a prophecy from Isaiah (written some 8oo years BC). This prophecy said, ‘The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. (Matthew 11:5).  Jesus was compassionate to show people what God’s kingdom is like. He was showing the very heart of God. He brought healing and wholeness, fullness and strength as a sign that God was doing something wonderfully miraculous.
