Why Should I Serve God?

Why Should I Serve God?

This fundamental question needs to be answered by each of us individually and corporately so that our hearts and motivations are in the right place. Unless we are completely in line with Scripture at this point, our service and worship will always be something less than acceptable to God.

The question can be answered by a simple illustration. I attended a concert in my youth for a well known rock star whom I didn’t particularly enjoy. As he and several band members exploded dramatically onto the stage, I said to my friend, ‘Why are you yelling and screaming?’ He stared at me with a rather quizzical, unbelieving face. He replied, ’Because he’s the star!’

Why should we serve God? Because he’s God. If for no other reason at all, God is God and deserves, even demands, to be worshipped. God’s nature, His holiness and majesty demand that He be worshipped and served.

But even more so, God is love. Love emanates from God like rays emanate from the sun.  Since God is love, the most appropriate response is to serve Him in love and gratitude. God has shown us more love than we could ever imagine. He has dealt with our personal and corporate rebellion  and rejection of Himself  by taking our rejection upon Himself and punishing His only Son rather than us. God has reached out to us in love and yearns for us to reach out to Him in love.

When we are in the presence of a judge we are respectful because he’s the judge. When we are in the presence of our Queen we act respectfully and appropriately because she is the Queen. How much more should we serve the holy and awesome God whose presence is always around us. If nothing else, we should serve Him because He is God and deserves to be served. But He is also a God of love and has lavished you and I with His love.
