Discover Your Spiritual Gift

How Can I Discover My Spiritual Gift?

The most common question about spiritual gifts is not theological or biblical but personal. Most people are not asking questions about the meaning of the Bible or the definitions of the various gifts but are simply asking ‘What is my spiritual gift?’

To help you find your spiritual gift, the following process can be worked through.

1. Pray. Prayer is vital for any Christian endeavour. Seek God’s guidance about your gifts. Ask God to show you what your particular gift is.

2. Determine your Passions. If God has given you a passion for a particular ministry or group of people or country etc then this is a good place to start. Rarely will God grant a gift to a person that is completely antagonistic to their passions. But Jonah is a case in point.

3. Ponder the needs in your church. Look at the church in which you are currently serving. Look at the needs in that church. Where are the holes? Where is the church lacking? What is the obvious need here?

4. Participate in the filling of one of those needs for 6-12months. As you identify a need, as you fill that need, resist the temptation for short term ministry. Stick at it for 6-12 months.

5. Assess your Performance. At the end of this period, assess your performance. Sit with a few mature Christians and get some hard hitting input from them about your performance. If after this time, you have made a noticeable difference in people’s lives then you have found your gift. If after this time, there is no discernible difference in people’s lives then you can conclude that this is not your gift. Go back to step 1 and start the process over again.

Not everyone knows their spiritual gift from the Lord but everyone is called to use it for the common good. If you don’t know your gift, this is one process to help you move forward.  Start today. Don’t delay.
